Lash Lift vs LVL Lashes: Is There Actually a Difference?

Lash lift and LVL lashes get used interchangeably online, which causes a lot of confusion. They are related but they are not exactly the same thing, and the difference is worth understanding before you book.

What a lash lift is

A lash lift is a broad term for any treatment that lifts natural lashes from the root using a chemical process. The lashes are shaped over a silicone rod or shield, a setting solution is applied, and the result is lashes that appear more curled, lifted and open. A tint is usually included.

There are several different systems and brands that offer lash lifts. The technique, the products used, and the shape of the result can all vary depending on the system your practitioner is trained in.

What LVL is specifically

LVL stands for Lift, Volumise, Lengthen. It is a specific branded lash treatment rather than a generic technique. The key difference is in the approach: where a traditional lash lift tends to create a curled effect, LVL uses a straightening technique that lifts the lash from the root and points it directly upward.

The result is less of a curl and more of a straight, elongated lift. It tends to make the eye look more open and awake rather than giving the lashes a noticeably curled appearance. A lash tint is included as standard, which deepens the colour and adds definition without mascara.

Which one gives a more natural result

LVL generally produces a more natural-looking result. Because the lashes are straightened upward rather than curled, the effect is subtle enough that most people just look like they have naturally great lashes rather than lashes that have clearly had something done to them.

A traditional lash lift with a more pronounced curl can look slightly more glamorous or dramatic depending on the rod size used. Some clients prefer this and some find it looks less natural on them. It really comes down to your lash type and the look you are going for.

How long each one lasts

Both treatments last roughly the same amount of time: 6 to 8 weeks, depending on your natural lash growth cycle. As your lashes shed and new ones grow through, the lift gradually fades. Neither treatment requires infills or maintenance appointments between sessions.

Which one is right for you

If you want a natural, wide-eyed look and minimal maintenance, LVL is likely the better fit. The technique works particularly well on clients with shorter or straighter lashes because the upward lift creates the appearance of more length.

If you have naturally longer lashes and want a more obvious curl or lift, a traditional lash lift might suit you better. The best way to decide is to have a conversation with your practitioner about your lashes specifically and what you are hoping to achieve.
